I finally have a moment to myself.
The kids are in bed. The house is clean. My laptop is closed.
And yet, I can't settle.
My mind is still running: Did I respond to that email? Did I pack what the kids need for tomorrow?
I'm lying in my bed, but I'm not actually resting.
This Shows Up Everywhere
End of the day: The kids are in bed. You finally have time to yourself. But you can’t relax.
Vacations: Everything’s handled. But three days in, you still can’t fully let go.
During gaps in your day: You get 20 quiet minutes. Yet your brain keeps scanning.
When someone else takes over: They’re handling it. But your brain won’t stop tracking.
This Feeling is: Hypervigilance
Hypervigilance is when your brain can’t exit the task-scanning mode even after all the work is done.
In a hypervigilant brain:
➜ The prefrontal cortex (the part that manages planning and problem-solving) keeps mental tabs open
What's next? Did I finish that work task?
Did the kids eat enough? What still needs handling?
Did I remember to order groceries? Is everything actually covered?
➜ The amygdala (the internal threat detector) stays on low alert.
Not because there's danger, but because your brain hasn't received the signal that says: "You can stop now".
And as long as tabs are open, our brain keep assuming: The work isn't finished.
So your body stays activated. You can't settle.
Why Your Doesn’t Brain Switch Off
Because of two factors:
⚠️ High cognitive load
You're likely tracking a lot by default.
More schedules, more dependencies, more variables.
Which means your prefrontal cortex has many tabs open before the day even ends.
⚠️ Context blurring
When you're managing multiple responsibilities in the same space like working from home, caregiving, household management, then boundaries start to disappear.
Your brain never gets a clear cue that the context has changed.
So, it doesn’t switch modes.
For people who manage fewer roles, or whose roles happen in different physical spaces, the brain naturally down-regulates when the context changes.
For some of us, it’s not the case. So, the prefrontal cortex can't tell if the work is done and it defaults to staying vigilant.
What I Stumbled Upon That Worked
After years of trying everything from journaling to breathing exercises and meditation apps, I inadvertently tried something new.
I explicitly told my prefrontal cortex to close the loops.
After putting the kids to bed, I paused and said to myself:
"The kids ate. All the chores are done. The day is over."
For some reason, my head felt lighter.
That night I didn’t go over my usual list anymore.
The next day I looked up what might have happened.
Why This Works: Closing the Loop
When I named all that was complete, I sent a clear signal to my prefrontal cortex: These tabs can close now.
This made a difference.
So, my prefrontal cortex stepped back.
My amygdala got the message: Threat-scanning isn't needed.
And, my nervous system finally began to move from sympathetic (alert) to parasympathetic (rest) mode.
But It Takes Practice
The first time I did this, the shift was subtle but real.
The second night, I noticed it faster.
By the third night, my body began anticipating it, ready to relax the moment I started closing my loops.
Some nights, I still feel wired. My brain will argue back: "But what about…"
That's okay. I just acknowledge it and return to the next closing statement.
This difficulty in switching off is closely related to the same pattern that keeps the mind returning to familiar worries.

Try this tonight
After the kids are in bed (or your workday ends), take 60 seconds.
Do a mental scan and close the loops.
Say to yourself:
"The day is over.
[Name whatever is complete.]
I'm safe. I can rest now."
Notice if anything changes in your body.
Try it for three nights. Then hit reply and tell me:
Did your body respond? How long did it take to feel the difference?
