After my second one was born, and the end of my maternity leave was near, I kept replaying the same questions and concerns.
Should I go back to work? But I can't leave the baby. But staying home all day is hard. But...
Every morning and night. While nursing. While looking at other women go to or get back from work. When I looked at my work table.
I had no doubt that if I thought hard enough and considered every pro and con, the answer, and the conviction for that answer would arrive. So, I thought on and on.
One day it crossed my mind that this was a pattern with me. That I have done the same thing about a few other high-stakes decisions too.
So I started reading about what may be happening.
This is What I Learned About Repetitive Worry Loops
There are two things at play in the brain:
1. Automaticity: Why the brain brings up the same worry again, the moment you mind has space
2. An exhausted prefrontal cortex: Why one worry turns into a chain of new ones.
1️⃣ Automaticity: The reason your brain brings up the same worry again, the moment your mind has space
What it is: This is our brain’s ability to perform a task with little or no conscious thought. It happens when a behavior becomes over-learned through practice. Eg. typing, driving on a familiar route.
How it works in the brain: Repetition of a behavior makes its corresponding neural pathways strong, making it easier for the brain to walk the same path easily and quickly in future.
What it means:
The more often you worry about something, the stronger the corresponding neural pathways become. This means you’ll slip into down that worry loop faster, with less stimulation or cues needed.
That’s why you end up repeatedly worrying about the same topic - evening, night, tomorrow, and so on.
2️⃣ An exhausted prefrontal cortex: The reason why one worry turns into a chain of new ones
When we worry, two parts of our brain work together:
Your amygdala scans for danger and sounds the alarm when it finds a threat (real or imagined).
Your prefrontal cortex is supposed to step in, look at the threat, and either solve it or tell the amygdala to calm down.
When your amygdala and prefrontal cortex work well together:
Amygdala: “What if I mess up this presentation?”
You feel worried, scared, alert.
PFC intervenes: “Okay, let’s prepare.”
But when your prefrontal cortex is exhausted, overwhelmed from stress, exhaustion, or just years of worrying, it loses its ability to "brake" the alarm. It becomes too weak to filter out the noise.
So, instead of problem-solving, your PFC lets every intrusive thought pass through. Without that guard at the door, the amygdala’s "What ifs" begin to chain together unchecked: “What if I forget my points? What if someone asks something I can't answer? What if this ruins my credibility?”
With each new fear that the weakened PFC fails to block, the alarm stays on. That is why you get stuck, with one worry leading to another.
How to Step Off a Worry Loop?
The key to step off to support your prefrontal cortex so it can do its job of thinking clearly, separating facts from fear, solving problems, planning, regulating, and helping you respond rather than react.
➜ Catch yourself on the path
When I noticed that I’m starting to worry about the same thing again I reminded myself: “I’m thinking about the same set of worries again. This is a loop.”
This is not to dismiss the worry but to recognize the pattern.
Why it helps: Becoming aware activates your prefrontal cortex and slows down amygdala’s alarm.
➜ Ask the interrupting question
Ask: “Is this problem-solving, or am I just looping?”
- If you’re coming up with new information or taking action, it is problem-solving.
- If you’re replaying the same fear with different words, it is looping.
Why it helps: This clarity is enough to interrupt the loop and take the next step.
➜ Ask an actionable question
My brain couldn't do anything with "I can't leave my baby, but I can't afford to quit."
Instead I asked: "What would help me feel more at peace with either choice?"
Why it helps: Actionable questions re-engage your PFC into problem-solving, pulling you out of the amygdala’s fear mode.
Your brain can't solve vague fears. It can solve actionable questions.
➜ Generate options
I talked to my cousin who went back to work after her second.
I asked my manager if there's any schedule flexibility.
I actually ran the numbers on what unpaid leave would look like.
Why it helps: None of my options solved everything. But they helped because having options signals to your amygdala that you have some control, which helps it calm down.
The opposite of anxiety isn't having all the answers. It's having some agency.
Accept what can’t be changed
Sometimes after everything there's still uncertainty.
Fighting unchangeable situations keeps your amygdala in high alert.
But accepting them allows your prefrontal cortex to redirect energy toward what you can influence, and not waste it on what won’t change, no matter how much you worry.
Sometimes you’ll still slip into old loops. And that’s okay.
Because every time you identify the loop, ask actionable questions, and accept the unchangeable the old neural path fades; and the new one becomes more automatic.
